Lake Tahoe Snow and Resort Report
Lake Tahoe snowpack is currently at 47% of normal, although March is bringing an opportunity for several new snow storms. The forecast is predicting snowstorms from March 5th through the 7th, and more snow starting around March 10th that should last throughout mid-month.
Ski Resort Snow Report
Northstar currently has 50 inches of packed powder at the base and 94 inches at the top, with 88% of their trails open. Of their 20 ski lifts, 17 are open.
Palisdades Tahoe received 3 inches of snow at the top and 1 inch of snow at the base from last weekend’s storm. This brings their machine groomed snow levels to 27 inches at the base and 122 inches at the top. Currently, 71% of their trails are open and 27 of 36 lifts are operating.
Sugar Bowl has received an excellent amount of snow this season and currently has 65-127 inches of packed powder. They have 104 of 105 trails open and of the 12 lifts, 10 are currently operating.
Soda Springs too, being located in the summit, has had a great season of snow, with 129 inches of packed powder and 100% of their trails and lifts open.
Spring Skiing
Based on the weather, we usually finish March with Spring skiing conditions. Palisades Tahoe tends to stay open longer than other resorts. On many occassions, they have stayed open until July 4th. Of course, closing dates will depend upon when the snow melts.
Spring skiing offers a unique blend of warm sunshine, soft snow, and a lively atmosphere that makes it a favorite among skiers. As temperatures rise, the snow transitions into a softer, more forgiving surface, often called “corn snow,” which provides an enjoyable and smooth ride.
Unlike the frigid conditions of midwinter, spring skiing allows for lighter clothing and longer days on the slopes, with extended daylight giving skiers more time to enjoy the mountain. Many resorts celebrate the season with fun events, from pond skimming competitions to music festivals, adding to the vibrant energy of spring skiing.
Ski Safety Tips
While spring conditions can be fantastic, they also require some adjustments in approach. The snow tends to be firm in the morning, softening as the sun warms it throughout the day, so skiers often plan their runs accordingly.
Waxing skis for warmer temperatures can help maintain speed on the wetter snow, and staying hydrated is crucial in the milder weather. Another perk of spring skiing is the potential for great deals on lift tickets and lodging, as resorts look to extend the season.
With a mix of bluebird skies, laid-back vibes, and excellent conditions, spring skiing offers an unforgettable way to close out the winter sports season.
