Woodstove Replacement Program

woodstove

Placer County is offering rebates as an incentive to replace old woodstoves with CPA certified units. They are accepting applications for their incentive program that can give you a $500-$600 refund on the purchase of a EPA certified stove.

A refund will be issued by the Placer County Air Pollution Control District (APCD). Qualified low-income applicants can receive up to $2500 in cash to replace an old woodstove or fireplace.

EPA Certified Woodstoves

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that replacing a non-certified stove with an EPA certified one will reduce emissions equivalent to 5 diesel buses. EPA certified woodstoves burn 70% cleaner than fireplaces and old woodstoves.

Additionally, using an EPA certified woodstove will save you money on firewood. It is estimated that these more efficient woodstoves burn 1/3 less firewood.

You can tell if your woodstove is inefficient if you see smoke coming out of your chimney. Additionally, you can check your manual or look for the EPA certification on your unit to see if it is compliant. If you can’t find your manual, you can search for the manufacturer or manual online.

Not only will this program make burning wood during winter safer for your family, it will help keep the air clean in the Lake Tahoe basin.

Qualifications

This program requires that you receive pre-approval from APCD prior to removing the wood-burning device.

The old woodstove must NOT already be an EPA certified unit (i.e., older than 1988). The new unit must be EPA-certified, or be a Pellet, Propane, Natural Gas or Electric Stove or Insert. The home must be more than one year old (not applicable to new home construction). Complete removals without purchasing a new unit are NOT eligible.

Application Requirements

Get pre-approval by calling (530) 745-2326 and have information about your existing, non-EPA unit available to discuss.

Once approved, you must have documentation confirming removed device is permanently deactivated.  You will submit a photo of newly installed unit and receipt for the new unit. Reimbursement checks will be issued directly to the approved applicants on a first-come first-serve basis, until funding is depleted.

Expect at least one month for processing payment. Reimbursement will not be issued without itemized receipt from a licensed disposal or metal recycling facility.

Placer County began accepting applications in early 2024.  If you are an interested applicant please contact Molly Johnson, by phone (530) 745-2326 or by email at mjjohnso@placer.ca.gov with questions or for additional information.
